Jim Card has tinkered with various forms of woodworking off and on for most of his life. In recent years he has expanded on it to now include wood art. He said he finds it to be challenging and relaxing at the same time. He finds it to be very rewarding to see a piece come to life as it nears completion. He loves to design pieces that highlight the beauty of nature through the wood grains and colors. A while back he purchased a laser engraver to add his information to the back of his cutting boards. That has now opened up a whole new area to explore and create in.
In addition to woodworking, Jim enjoys being outdoors where he enjoys the beauty of nature. He said that even when he goes fishing, he finds himself looking around at trees, the shoreline, clouds, and landscape. He started taking his camera along with him and found that he spent more time taking pictures than he did fishing. You can find some of his photography on the Wall Art page.
When asked what woodworking and photography have in common to him, he said that everything he creates highlights the beauty of nature.
Everything they sell is made by Jim with occasional help from his wife, Joan, in Smithville, Missouri, a northern suburb of Kansas City.
Look through their impressive work. Should you decide to make a purchase, Jim said that he hopes that you will enjoy it as much as he enjoyed making it. Jim is constantly inspired to design new pieces as he is captivated by the shapes, colors, textures and materials he sees in the world around us.
A passion for inspired design. Uniquely beautiful materials and an elevated design aesthetic. Crafted with the idea that great design tells a story.
They do not buy wood in bulk, sight unseen. Jim carefully selects each piece of woods that he uses by hand one piece at a time. He inspects each piece looking for the most beautiful colors and interesting grain.
Also, every photo draws you in where you feel a connection with the image.
As their name suggests, they go beyond what many people do to add something extra to every piece whether it is using the most beautiful woods they could find, sanding a cutting board to a finish that is as smooth as glass, or adding additional strength and support inside a piece that you can't even see. They do all of that because they create pieces that they would want in their own home.
Call them old-fashioned, but in a world where everything seems to be disposable, at Something A Little Extra they hold onto the belief in building products that last. This begins with choosing the right materials and employing the finest techniques to assemble and finish them. The skilled artisans at Something A Little Extra employ time-tested techniques to achieve the highest level of long-lasting quality and style. Why are our prices higher than similar looking average pieces? Because they aren't aiming for average.
It might seem outdated in today’s world of automation, but their handcrafted quality and craftsmanship simply cannot be matched. They take great pride in knowing the care and dedication they put into each piece translates to lasting quality and years of memories for you and your family.
